Flu shots in pregnancy: missing the point?
Yahoo! just posted an article on how few pregnant women are vaccinated, and offered multiple explanations for why. But the one great and obvious reason is not mentioned: everry obstetrician knows that when some of his patients have bad outcomes (and it's inevitable they will) he's going to be sued for giving the flu shot, and it's going to cost him thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, of dollars to defend himself. Who's kidding whom in this situation? And we refuse to limit peoples' ability to sue, preferring lower-quality medical care and unlimited access to courts. Surely this needs to be discussed while we're in the midst of trying to overhaul our health-care system!
